Kyrgios had indicated he was experiencing some wear and tear from a busy couple of months, which has seen him make three semifinals in four events and get two wins against world No. 2 Novak Djokovic. He took Roger Federer to three tiebreaks in the semifinals of Miami, then flew to Brisbane, Australia, for  Davis Cup.

"I was hurting physically,” Kyrgios said following his two singles wins for Australia in the Davis Cup quarterfinals. "I need a rest."

Kyrgios joins Roger Federer, Kei Nishikori and Gael Monfils in withdrawing from Monte Carlo. The Masters event is still scheduled to have four of the ATP Top 5.
