Is Eugenie Bouchard back?

It’s probably way to soon to answer that question, but she’s certainly opened some eyes this week in Madrid.

The 23-year-old came into this tournament having won just five of 13 WTA matches to start the season, but after getting by Alize Cornet in the first round she pulled off a massive upset of Maria Sharapova in the second.

In an interview leading up to the tournament, the Canadian branded Sharapova—who was suspended 15 months for testing positive for meldonium—a cheater, and opined that she shouldn’t be allowed to play again.

Bouchard walked the walk after talking the talk by ousting the five-time Grand Slam champion, and on Wednesday she continued her resurgence with a stunning victory over soon-to-be world No. 1 Angelique Kerber.

Bouchard dominated from start to finish, taking the first set 6-3 and leading the second 5-0 before Kerber retired with a left thigh injury.

Bouchard will take on eighth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova for a spot in the semifinals.

The one-time WTA champion had a breakthrough season in 2014, when she reached the Wimbledon final and the semifinals at the Australian and French Opens.
