Three to See, Day 5: Dolgopolov could trouble Wawrinka at French Open

Each day of the tournament, we'll preview and predict three must-see matches at the French Open.

Do you like your theatrics to come with a little tennis on the side? Then you should get up early, or get out to Chatrier early, on Thursday. The main stadium schedule kicks off with a match between two of the WTA’s most expressive players. This one should also be competitive. Strycova is ranked 17th and Cornet is 41st, but the Frenchwoman leads their head to head 5-2, and she’s playing at home. Which means—you guessed it—more drama.

Winner: Strycova

Once Stan gets on a roll, there aren’t many players who can stop him. After his win in Geneva last week, he seems to be starting another one just in time for a deep run at Roland Garros. But Dolgopolov is one of the few guys who is talented and eccentric enough to trouble Wawrinka even when he’s playing well. The Ukrainian has won two of their three meetings, including the only one on clay. With his wild spins and changes of pace, he could easily throw Wawrinka out of his rhythm for a set or two. But for three? There’s a reason one of these guys is ranked 3rd, and the other 89th.

Winner: Wawrinka

There’s a fair amount on the line in this one, considering that the winner will likely play Andy Murray, who has looked vulnerable of late. Del Potro is 3-1 against Almagro, and has won their last three meetings. But this is no sure thing: Delpo has been injured and Almagro has shown some signs of life during the clay season.
