Nick Kyrgios has been knocked off early at a second consecutive Grand Slam. After falling in the second round at the Australian Open in January, the 22-year-old was booted in the Round of 64 again on Thursday at the French Open.

Kyrgios, seeded 18th, was beaten by South African Kevin Anderson, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2. The favorite took the first set but was largely uncompetitive in the next three. He double-faulted twice to drop the second set, and then proceeded to break his racquet and smash it six times against a water container. Anderson won the final two sets in just over an hour, dropping three games in the process.

On the women’s side, some order was restored as Simona Halep, Elina Svitolina and Kristina Pliskova all won.

Halep, the third seed who many picked to win the tournament, defeated Tatjana Maria to reach the third round. The 2014 runner-up, who said before the Slam that an ankle injury might prevent her from playing, looked awfully healthy in the routine win. Next up for the Romanian is No. 26 seed Daria Kasatkina.

Fifth-seeded Svitolina overcome a slow start to beat Tsvetana Pironkova, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. The Ukrainian, who won the Italian Open in Rome last month, hit 13 errors and played smart tennis in the decider, committing just eight unforced errors. Svitolina will play Magda Linette for a spot in the fourth round.

Second-seeded Pliskova, the highest-seeded player left in the women’s draw with Angelique Kerber out, is into the third round at Roland Garros for the first time in her career. The hard-hitting Czech defeated 86th-ranked Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, to set up a meeting with world No. 73 Carina Witthoeft.
