Sam Querrey did it again on Wednesday, knocking off the top seed at Wimbledon for a second straight year. This year, though, the victory over No. 1 Andy Murray earned him a spot in the Wimbledon semifinals. The 29-year-old is the first American man in a Grand Slam semi since Andy Roddick in 2009, and only Marin Cilic stands in the way of him playing for the title.

Earlier in the fortnight, when the semifinals must have felt like a million miles away, Querrey sat down with Tennis Channel’s Brett Haber and Justin Gimelstob following his first-round win over Thomas Fabbiano.

The Californian discussed his next opponent, Nikoloz Basilashvili—Querrey would beat him in four sets—the importance of confidence, setting the tone for the rest of the tournament, the state of American tennis and his stunning win over Novak Djokovic in the third round here a year ago.

Little did Haber, Gimelstob and Querrey know, of course, that the veteran would go on to win three consecutive five-set matches—over 12th seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Kevin Anderson and now Murray—and become arguably the story of the tournament.
