Jack Sock started the season out strong on hard courts, but saw his form take a dip on the clay and grass, posting a 6-6 record between Houston in April and Atlanta last week.

Back on the hard courts and back in front of his home fans in the States, the American has had a resurgence this week in Washington, D.C.

The world No. 19 upset third-seeded Milos Raonic, 7-5, 6-4, on Friday to reach the Citi Open semifinals, and he didn’t even need to take a tiebreaker from the big-serving Canadian to do it.

Sock came into the match just 2-8 against the former Wimbledon runner-up, though he had come back to beat him, 0-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8), in 2016 in Shanghai the last time they’d played. (They were slated to meet in the Delray Beach final in February, but a Raonic walkover gave Sock the title.)

The 24-year-old has yet to drop a set in this tournament, edging Marius Copil, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (6), before ousting countryman Jared Donaldson, 7-6 (6), 6-2.

Oddly enough, Sock had an easier time with the world No. 10 than he did with his first two opponents, both of whom are well out of the Top 50.

Sock has won three 250-level tournaments in his career, and now he has a real opportunity to win his maiden 500, which would be the most significant of his career. He’ll play No. 45 Kevin Anderson—who defeated No. 200 Yuki Bhambri later in the day—for a spot in the final, and will be heavily favored.

Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, Tommy Paul and Kei Nishikori remain on the other side of the draw.
