The 2015 Citi Open champion may soon be back in the finals in Washington after reaching the semifinals by defeating Tommy Paul in three sets. Things were very tense from the beginning as the American managed to steal a break in the first set, snagging the early lead in the process. Then a high-octane tiebreak in the second set forced Nishikori to push out a very close 7-6 (10-8) victory.

However, by the third, the Japanese player managed to find his groove and was able to close out the match with a 6-4 win. He moves on to face Alexander Zverev in the semifinals, who defeated Daniil Medvedev. This is just the second time that Nishikori has made it to this round, the last time coming in 2015 when he won the title.
