Roger Federer says his back injury has improved significantly since he withdrew from the Cincinnati Masters.

Federer, saying he experienced the injury during the Montreal tournament the week before, indicated that it was similar to previous back problems he has had at various times during his career.

The world No. 3 reached the final in Montreal and has won five of the eight events he has played this season.

"I mean, other than the back issue, you know, I'm coming in as good as I can possibly feel, because I have played extremely well and I have not overplayed," he said at a press conference to promote the Laver Cup competition. "I'm feeling really excited to be here. I'm back on the practice courts. Feeling much, much better than a week ago. That's very encouraging for me ahead of New York."

MarinCilic, the 2014 U.S. Open champion, also said he is fit again following an adductor injury that has kept him sidelined since Wimbledon.

"I had a short period of time without playing and didn't play these two Masters 1000 events," he said. "I took time to prepare, to heal and to get 100 percent."

Andy Murray is also set to return at the U.S. Open, having been sidelined with a hip injury.
