Stanislas Wawrinka, who retired with knee problems during his third-round match at Marseille, says he was experiencing a typical reaction and did not have a new injury.

The 32-year-old was playing his fourth event since coming back from double knee surgery in 2017.

"At 3-3, I hit a forehand volley and there was a slight contact with the knee," he told press in Marseille. "The previous two days of practice had been good... [but] matches are always different because of the tension, the nerves."

Though frustrated at having to retire, Wawrinka was happy with his improvement during this week and his previous two events at Sofia and Rotterdam.

Here are some highlights from his win over Viktor Troicki at Sofia:

"I'm told by my team, unfortunately and fortunately, these are normal pains," he said. "I have to take the positive I can find each day, in my tennis, physique, movement, and keep working."

The three-time Grand Slam champion was the tournament's second seed.
