Nick Kyrgios seemed ready to take on Daniil Medvedev in his opening match on Saturday, but instead it'll be Medvedev facing lucky loser Matteo Berrettini.

Kyrgios, who hasn't played in an ATP match since losing to Grigor Dimitrov in the Australian Open, announced his withdrawal from Indian Wells on Friday. The 22-year-old is dealing with pain in his right elbow, which also forced him to withdraw from Acapulco.

It's a tough break for the Australian, who was one of the more exciting stories at last year's BNP Paribas Open. Kyrgios made a splash by defeating 12-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in the fourth round. The world No. 20 did, however, have to withdraw from his next match against eventual champion Roger Federer.

It's also rough news for Kyrgios because he was playing well to start off 2018. He won the crown in Brisbane and had seemingly turned a corner in his young career.
