Two-time Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza is hoping to take advantage of a favorable draw this week at Indian Wells.

The No. 3 seed's tournament begins against American qualifier Sachia Vickery on Friday night. It will be the first meeting between the two players, so neither will be very familiar with the game style or habits of the other.

Vickery advanced to the second round after defeating wildcard Eugenie Bouchard 6-3, 6-4 on Wednesday. The world No. 100 has now won three straight matches heading into her meeting with Muguzura.

Muguruza should, however, be feeling great heading into the week. Despite flaming out in a 3-6, 7-6 (11), 6-1 loss to Daria Kasatkina in Dubai, the Spaniard has been rediscovering her Grand Slam-winning form in recent weeks. She held three match points against the 20-year-old Russian, but was ultimately unable to convert.

Prior to playing in Dubai, Muguruza was solid on her way to the Doha final. She seems to be in a better place mentally than when she was upset by Su-wei Hsieh in the second round of the Australian Open. Muguruza has credited working with Conchita Martinez for her improved play (who she added to her team with Sam Smyuk).

If all goes as planned, Muguruza could likely face either world No. 16 CoCo Vandeweghe or world No. 21 Ashleigh Barty in a tough Round of 16 matchup. It's possible that she'd face Petra Kvitova in the quarterfinals in a rematch of the Qatar Total Open final.

While that road isn't necessarily a walk in the park, Muguruza wouldn't have to tackle threats like Simona Halep, Caroline Wozniacki, Venus Williams, Serena Williams, Jelena Ostapenko or Elina Svitolina until the semifinals or final.
