On Tuesday, Daria Kasatkina and Christina McHale will meet in the second round of the Volvo Car Open in Charleston. Kasatkina, as many of you saw in Indian Wells, is an up-and-coming star on the WTA tour—as well as the defending Charleston champion. Last year, the Russian defeated eventual French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, 6-3, 6-1, to earn her first title at the WTA level.

She hasn't slowed down since. The 20-year-old has already reached the final at both the Dubai Tennis Championships and the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells this year, and while she was unable to earn a title at either of those events, her versatile and powerful game has put the rest of the tennis world on notice.

Kasatkina's title defense also happens to begin against a player that she knows how to beat. She faced McHale in the second round of last year's US Open and won that match, 7-5, 6-3.

McHale is not going to make it easy on Kasatkina, though. While the American is only ranked No. 86 in the world, the former Top 25 player is capable of big upsets. If she is playing her best tennis, she should at least put a scare into Kasatkina at a venue in which she'll have plenty of support.

But if Kasatkina is playing at anywhere close to her peak, it's hard to imagine her slipping up this early. Her game is incredibly well-rounded, as she is capable of beating you with her serve, from the baseline and at the net. That will give her a bit of a larger margin for error.
