Bautista Agut advanced to the second round by defeating Peter Gojowczyk, 6-4, 6-3, but the 30-year-old is not playing his best tennis right now. Bautista Agut lost in straight sets against Borna Coric in the second round of Indian Wells, and followed that up with an opening-round loss to Michael Mmoh at the Miami Open. The switch to clay, a surface the world No. 16 has had success on, seems to have come at a good time for Bautista Agut.
Highlights from Bautista Agut's win over Pouille in the final in Dubai:
The same can be said for Lopez, a fellow Spaniard who also grew up playing on clay. Lopez recently made headlines for questioning Roger Federer's decision to skip the clay season, but he's hoping to stay in the news with a deep run this week in Monte Carlo.
The 36-year-old faced Benoit Paire in the first round of this event, and he ended up coming away with a 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-4 win. The big server will need to continue earning quick points, even on this slow surface, if he's to overcome a player he is very familiar with.
Bautista Agut and Lopez have met three times in their careers, with Lopez winning twice, both times on hard courts. But in there one clay-court encounter, it was Bautista Agut who claimed victory, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5, at the 2016 Madrid Masters. That was their last meeting, and it will surely be in both players' minds on Wednesday.
