Both of these women reached the final of their last event. While Halep lost to Elina Svitolina in Rome, Riske’s surprise run in Nuremberg was ended by Johanna Larsson. That may be all that the world’s No. 1-ranked and 70th-ranked women have in common, but it may be enough to make this a tricky encounter for Halep. She’s 2-0 against Riske, but the American took a set from her last fall. Most concerning for Halep could be the back injury she seemed to suffer in the Rome final. We’ll see if it has lingered, and if Riske has the confidence to take advantage of it. Winner: Halep

A showcase for the ATP’s future, as well as the stroke that refuses to die, the one-handed backhand. This second-round match may be a preview of a semifinal or even a final at Roland Garros someday—in the post-Rafael Nadal future, of course.

For now, Thiem is the more established player: He’s five years older, he's ranked 20 spots higher, he’s been to the semis in Paris the last two years, and he has a 2-1 record over Tsitsipas. But Tsitsipas won their last meeting, in startlingly one-sided fashion, last month in Barcelona, and he has begun to show that he has a Top 10 future of his own. Still, asking the 19-year-old to beat Thiem at Roland Garros now is probably a leap too far. Winner: Thiem

No, Marco Trungelliti’s 15 minutes of fame aren’t up quite yet. Like other Cinderella stories in tennis—remember Marcus Willis at Wimbledon two years ago?—this very lucky loser from Argentina, who made an all-night drive to collect a career-changing payday at the French Open, has at least one more round of fame in him. Judging by his opponent, though, he might prolong his stay for a couple more days. The 190th-ranked Trungelliti will face 72nd-ranked Marco Cecchinato of Italy. While Cecchinato won their only meeting—at the Ostrava Challenger last year—in straight sets, Trungelliti must be feeling as if his whole life is gravy at the moment. That’s a good way to go into a tennis match. Winner: Trungelliti
