Rafael Nadal plans to return by the Paris Masters, according to his uncle Toni, and does not want to rush his recovery.

The No. 1 retired with a knee injury against Juan Martin del Potro in the semifinals of the US Open, and has withdrawn from Beijing and Shanghai.

"Rafa told me in our recent conversation that he would return at Paris and would not play the Asian swing because he would not be ready to compete again," said Toni, speaking to *EFE*. "There is no reason to force his return. He has experience that if forced, everything is complicated. At 32, you have to take care of yourself."

Nadal has said the injury is "nothing new" but that it was usually difficult to tell the amount of time it would take to recover.

The withdrawals could also put Nadal's No. 1 ranking under pressure. The Spaniard, who won Beijing in 2017 and reached the Shanghai final, will be just a little more than 1,200 points in front of Novak Djokovic, who has no points to defend.

Nadal has also been offered a wild card into Vienna, but has not indicated whether he is considering playing the event, which is the week before Paris.

Del Potro, who withdrew from this week's Laver Cup event, has announced he plans to return at Beijing.
