TENNIS CHANNEL LIVE: Juan Martin del Potro withdraws from the Australian Open

Juan Martin del Potro has announced that he will not play the Australian Open, the Argentine still sidelined with a knee injury he experienced in Asia.

Del Potro fractured his kneecap during a fall on court in his third-round match in Shanghai and has not played since, though he resumed practicing two weeks ago.

On social media, del Potro said he would be announcing his comeback event but that "it won’t happen in Australia," nevertheless adding, "I’m happy with my progress."

Del Potro is coming off his best season since he won the 2009 US Open, reaching a career-high No. 3, winning his first Masters title at Miami and returning to the final of the US Open.

Del Potro is No. 5 in the rankings.
