Roger Federer says he's "very excited" about playing Serena Williams for the first time, with the two scheduled to face each other in mixed doubles at the Perth Arena next week.

That much-anticipated meeting would occur on the second day of the Hopman Cup team competition, as defending champion Switzerland takes on the United States.

"I agree, it's a big deal," Federer told press at Perth. "We’ll probably play it down a little bit and say it’s not that big of a deal for us, it’s just another tennis match, but it really isn’t because it’s probably going to happen once and never again.

"That’s why I hope we’re both going to be injury free when that day comes around."

The world No. 3 also plans to watch Williams courtside in the women's singles.

"Thankfully I'm not playing her in singles," he said. "I'm very excited playing against her and watching her play [Belinda Bencic].

"For me to be playing against her in doubles, it's definitely something very special."

The tie starts with Federer facing Frances Tiafoe in the men's singles, followed by Bencic-Williams and then a mixed-doubles match between the two teams.
