Gael Monfils will switch one tournament for another this week, going to Dubai following his withdrawal from Marseille.

Sidelined with a wrist injury, 32-year-old Frenchman Monfils now plans to cheer for his girlfriend, Elina Svitolina, at the women's event in Dubai. He told French press a little more about their relationship.

"I can confirm that it's going very good," said Monfils, laughing. "This relationship has more publicity but that's because she is one of the best players in the world."

Svitolina was in Sofia watching Monfils two weeks ago, and this week he will sit in her box before playing himself, if his wrist allows.

"I'm going to join her this week in Dubai," he said. "I hope to support her, and I hope to play the men's event next week."

The two went public at the Australian Open and have been visible on social media. During his appearance at Marseille, Monfils showed a photo of himself watching Svitolina play her opening round.

"With Eli, there's happiness, really," he told Le Parisien.

Though they are both pursuing careers as professional tennis players, he says that's not important to their relationship.

"For me, she's not a tennis player. If she played football or cricket, I would still go see her in Dubai," he said. "We are together because we love each other. It's just one more thing that we have in common and can understand some things more easily."

Monfils is No. 23 in the rankings.
