Fabio Fognini had no trouble advancing to the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open after a straight-set win, 6-4, 6-3, over Kyle Edmund.

Fognini is coming off a big win in Monte Carlo, where he won the biggest title of his career, beating 11-time champion Rafael Nadal in the semifinals en route to the trophy win. He then withdrew from Barcelona and Estoril due to a leg injury.

In the third round, the 31-year-old Italian will face John Millman, who took out Steve Johnson, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5). Millman leads their head-to-head 1-0—he defeated Fognini in the second round of the 2018 U.S. Open.
