Halep survives illness, on-fire Linette to reach third round in Paris

Magda Linette came into Roland Garros on a five-match losing streak, but that didn't stop her from pushing defending champion Simona Halep to three sets. Halep was comfortably cruising, 6-4, 5-3, when she came off the rails, squandering three match points and losing four games in a row.

In the third set, Halep recovered quickly, putting her foot on the gas pedal to leap ahead 5-1. Her nerves returned, as she dropped the next two games. But she wouldn't be denied: on her fourth match point, she closed out the match, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.

"I don't feel that great. I'm a little bit sick. I just said that I have to fight until the end," Halep said on court. "And if I win it’s going to be really good, but if I lose that's it. I left everything I had today on the court."

On Tuesday, the world No. 87 ended her losing skid against French wild card Chloe Paquet in three sets. Halep also had a long first-round match, against Ajla Tomljanovic, winning 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.

Halep will face the winner of Lesia Tsurenko and Aleksandra Krunic on Saturday. But first, a day off.

"Tomorrow, I think I will sleep all day because I think I need that. I feel not really good," Halep said. "I have to recover."
