The third edition of the Laver Cup will begin on Friday in Geneva and Roger Federer is wasting no time with his preparation. The 20-time major champion, set to play his first event since losing to Grigor Dimitrov in five sets at the US Open, practiced with Team Europe Vice Captain Thomas Enqvist. Federer had revealed experiencing back and neck pain following his defeat to Dimitrov.

Australians Pat Rafter, John Newcombe, Ken Rosewall and Lleyton Hewitt took part in the draw ceremony for the 2020 ATP Cup, a team event that will feature 24 nations competing across three cities. It spans 10 days and features group stages in Brisbane, Sydney and Perth, with Sydney hosting the knockout portion of the competition. Every member of the ATP's current Top 10 has committed to playing.

Elise Mertens dispatched lucky loser Whitney Osuigwe, 6-3, 6-1, to win her opener in Osaka. The Belgian won 25 of her 27 first serve points in the 63-minute victory and now awaits the winner of Garbine Muguruza and Hsieh Su-wei.
