Since 2009, when this became a WTA Premier Mandatory event, there have been seven different women’s champions, and every one has reached at least one Grand Slam final. Only two men have won this tournament in the last seven years—and the year Tomas Berdych won it, Novak Djokovic wasn’t entered. The Serb has been simply superb: He’s 29–0 in Beijing. But there will be a new men's champ this year, as Djokovic was forced to withdraw with an elbow injury. You could make the argument that this is the most significant event held after the U.S. Open; the players seem to treat it that way, and it’s the biggest combined tournament in the month of October.
