Nicole Vaidisova (CZE)[10] vs. Lucie Safarova (CZE) Rod Laver Arena – 1st match
These two Czech teenagers have played three times and gone to three sets each time, so all signs point to a competitive match tomorrow. But Vaidisova’s talent level is almost peerless among the teenagers – apart from that knack of losing her temper – so she should be looking to win his one and reach her second Grand Slam semifinal. If she gets into trouble, look for frustration to set in.
Prediction: A lot of TV sets in the Czech Republic tuning in.
Serena Williams (USA) vs. Shahar Peer (ISR)[16] Rod Laver Arena – 2nd match
The big question in this match: how will Serena finally handle being the favorite again?
Prediction: With all guns blazing.
Mardy Fish (USA) vs. Andy Roddick (USA)[6] Rod Laver Arena – 3rd match
How often have these two hit together? Mardy Fish couldn’t begin to estimate. “We've logged a lot of time,” he said. “Two or three straight years there, we would practice every day.”
Fish lived with the Roddick family when the two were juniors in Florida, so the two know each other’s games inside out and remain good friends. But Fish has defeated Roddick just once, and that when Roddick retired in their first match all the way back in 2003. The two have definitely had some battles, however, particularly a very tight encounter in Cincinnati that ended in a third-set tiebreak.
Fish himself acknowledges that Roddick has had more experience on big occasions, and will find it tough to match the in-form Roddick over a best-of-five match in the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam.
Prediction: A little on-court banter.
