French Open 2007: Day 8 picks

By Kamakshi Tandon

With all eight Round of 16 women’s matches and 4 Round of 16 men’s matches taking place tomorrow, it’s a packed schedule. Three of the highlights:

Dinara Safina (RUS)[10] vs. Serena Williams (USA)[8]Court Philippe Chatrier – 11:00 am

These two haven’t played in a few years, and never on clay. Safina began the season by defeating Martina Hingis to win the Gold Coast title and has had very few bad losses this year (though being Safin’s sister, she has had a few).

All that has added up to reaching a career high of No. 9 in May. “Yes? I'm ranked ahead of her? I didn't even know,” said No. 8 seed Serena Williams after her last match.

Serena says she’s not happy with her form so far, but hasn’t needed to be given the opponents she’s faced. Though Safina upset Maria Sharapova here last year despite being 5-1 down in the third set, she’ll be facing a far more confident opponent when she goes up against Serena.

Prediction: Serena Williams

Roger Federer (SUI)[1] vs. Mikhail Youzhny (RUS)[13]Court Philippe Chatrier – 2nd match

We all know Youzhny gives Nadal trouble. Against Federer, however, he’s a futile 0-9 in head-to-head meetings. Looking at sets, it’s 2-19. And while clay might be the surface on which Federer is the most vulnerable, Youzhny’s also not at his best on it.

So why pick out this match? The Russian is the best player Federer has faced so far in the tournament, and has played him quite tough in their previous two meetings this year.

But apart from a tiebreak third-set against inspired Frenchman Thierry Ascione, Federer has rolled through to the fourth round. A slow starter, he thinks he’s moving well for “early on in a Grand Slam.” So unless ‘bad Federer’ shows up and Youhzny has an excellent day, things shouldn’t be too difficult for world No. 1.

Prediction: Federer

Patty Schnyder (SUI)[14] vs. Maria Sharapova (RUS)[2]Court Suzanne Lenglen 4th match

In some ways, it’s surprising that Maria Sharapova is even here. Vulnerable on clay and with just one small warmup tournament as preparation, her chances of winning the title are slim. Many expected her to pull out, rest her injuries and use the time to prepare for Wimbledon. But she showed up, saying she respects the event and also wants to get some match practice ahead of the grass season.

An easy draw and her trademark determination have definitely helped her through the first few rounds, but Schnyder is a tough proposition for Sharapova at this time.

With her spin and variety, Schnyder has a natural game for this surface. Schnyder tends to implode when playing playrs she doesn’t like, but unless the feisty (if kooky) veteran is holding a secret grudge against the Russian, she won’t be afraid to win the match. If Sharapova ends up winning, it’ll probably be because of her grit rather than her groundstrokes.

The two have played five times, with Sharapova winning all except the one encounter on clay. Chances are that trend will continue.

Prediction: Schnyder
