Andy Murray vs. Nikolay DavydenkoStadium 1 - Second match
This could be another stepping stone for Murray. Davydenko is in the Top 5 and ended Murray’s 2006 summer breakthrough run at the US Open. The Russian was physically stronger than the Scot at that point, but Murray has been working hard with Brad Gilbert to change that in the last few months. This will be full of long, corner-to-corner baseline rallies; the key will be whether Murray can get Davydenko off-balance enough with his various slices, angles, and drops.
Pick: Murray
Tommy Haas vs. Fernando GonzalezStadium 1 - 9:00 pm
This is a rematch of the Australian Open semifinal of a few month’s ago, in which Gonzalez simply outclassed Haas—it wasn’t close to being close. Now it’s time for a little something called German Payback. I’m inventing that term for this match. Haas has looked strong so far, while Gonzalez has had his lapses. He’s played a lot of tennis this season already and may be slightly burned right now.
Pick: Haas
Na Li vs. Vera ZvonarevaStadium 1 - 11:00 am
Bet you didn’t see this one coming this late in the tournament. I didn’t either. They’re both—you guessed it—hard-hitting baseliners who love their two-handed backhands. Li has been on a long, gradual upswing while Zvonareva made her first major noise of recent years yesterday by upsetting the first seed, Maria Sharapova. But I think her surge ends here; Li is just a little steadier and more stable.
Pick: Li
