Andy Roddick [3] vs. Rafael Nadal [2] Stadium 1 – 12:00 pm
This one is a big topic of debate because the two haven’t played since 2004, when Rafa wasn’t Rafa and Roddick was sliding down from the top rather than working his way back up. During those previous meetings, both won on their respective home turfs – Roddick at the US Open and Nadal in a Seville bullring during the Davis Cup final. Both have been playing well this week, Nadal striking his forehand beautifully and Roddick proving untouchable on serve.
The general consensus is that Roddick is more likely to win, but remember too that Nadal will find the noonday sun and high-bouncing conditions to his liking. One thing everyone’s happy to predict, however, is a battle royale.
Winner: Coin flip says – Nadal
Daniela Hantuchova [14] vs. Svetlana Kuznetsova [2] Stadium 1 – 2:00 pm
So here’s Hantuchova, back in the final where she achieved her first and last triumph in 2002 by defeating Martina Hingis to become the lowest seed to win a WTA event at that level. She’s played well this week, battling to three-set wins in her last three matches, but Kuznetsova will be a big step up.
Hantuchova did defeat Kuznetsova on her way to the last final she reached – Zurich in the fall – but the Russian has won their other five meetings from 2004 onwards and is likely to win again unless her form deserts her.
The emotional logic of the tournament says Hantuchova should win, but on-court logic says Kuznetsova should. We’ll see which is stronger.
Winner: Kuznetsova
Novak Djokovic [12] vs. Andy Murray [13] Stadium 1 – 4:30 pm
This would have been a tough call anyway, but the battering Murray took during his quarterfinal against Tommy Haas makes it impossible to predict. Everything hinges on how much Friday’s emotional contest took out of Murray and whether he’ll be able to move at full speed.
After that match, it’s hard to see Murray pulling out a win over Djokovic, who was impressive in dealing with the grinding rallies he had to play against David Ferrer in the afternoon heat. But don’t count out the Scot finding yet another way to win.
Winner: Murray
