Australian Open 2008: Day 8 picks

By Tom Perrotta

Roger Federer (SUI) [1] vs. Tomas Berdych (CZE) [13] Rod Laver Arena – final day match
Head-to-head

Did Janko Tipsarevic usher in a new world, where anyone can challenge the game's best player? Um, no. Don't believe me? Just watch Tomas Berdych, still best known for beating Federer at the 2004 Olympics in Greece, suffer on Monday.

Prediction: Federer

Maria Kirilenko (RUS) [27] vs. Daniela Hantuchova (SVK) [9] Vodafone Arena – second match
Head-to-head

Doesn't it seem like Hantuchova has been on the tour for, I don't know, 30 years or so? It happens that she's only 24 years old (I kid you not). It also happens that she has never reached a major semifinal and hasn't reached a quarterfinal since the 2003 Australian Open. This is a match she should win, which means there is a good chance she won't win it, but I'll guess that she's got a bit too much firepower for the tiny Kirilenko.

Prediction: Hantuchova

Novak Djokovic (SRB) [3] vs. Lleyton Hewitt (AUS) [19] Rod Laver Arena – 4:45 a.m.?
Head-to-head

Sorry, mate! Hewitt won on heart alone against Marcos Baghdatis. That won't be enough Monday evening in Melbourne. Djokovic has played superbly so far and wants another shot at Federer (they could meet in the semifinals).

Prediction: Djokovic

James Blake (USA) [12] vs. Marin Cilic (CRO) Margaret Court Arena – final match
Head-to-head

Cilic has been the most impressive youngster at this tournament, and not only because of his serve. He rallies patiently, plays the net at times, and moves surprisingly well, and smoothly, for a big guy--(then again, the 6-foot-5 Croat might be too short to play point guard for his home country's national basketball team). Blake pulled off an impressive comeback from two sets down against Sebastien Grosjean, but he never should have lost the first two sets to begin with.

Prediction: The palindrome does it again!
