Quotes of the Day

"No."
        – Julie Coin, on whether she had thought she could beat Ana Ivanovic

"I've moved past it, and, you know, whatever gets him to sleep at night is fine.  If he says after three hours he can't feel a ball hitting his racquet, then apparently every fifth set he's ever played he can't feel the ball."
        – James Blake, on the controversial point in his match against Fernando Gonzalez at the Olympics, where Gonzalez got the point despite Blake's shot appearing to touch Gonzalez's racquet before going long

"I will probably get in trouble by this answer. I think it would depend on who you're playing... Boy, I tell you what, I would certainly have said it had I been playing James or playing Andy or playing one of my friends, but I would have weighed: is my friendship with this guy worth a gold medal to me?"
        – Mardy Fish, on whether Gonzalez should have admitted that the ball touched his racquet

"I think it's easy to come up with headlines in newspapers... when I lose, you know -- 'filleted Fish,' kind of thing, 'fried Fish.' It's easy when I lose, because you throw one of those two out there."
        – Fish, on having a last name like his

"I wasn't going to go for it, and then just last minute, boom goes the dynamite."
        – Sam Querrey, on his shot around the net post

Thursday's Results of Note

Julie Coin (FRA) def. Ana Ivanovic (SRB) [1] 6-3, 4-6, 6-3

Ivanovic may have been rusty because of a thumb injury that had kept her off court, but this was one match she was fully expected to win. But a wildly inconsistent performance from the top seed coupled with some solid serving and impressive composure from the qualifier clinched the upset.

The 188-ranked Coin becomes the lowest-ranked player to defeat a No. 1.

Mardy Fish (USA) def. Paul-Henri Mathieu (FRA) [24] 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4

With 27 aces, Fish got his first win in three career meetings with Mathieu. Next up is a match with his best friend on the tour, James Blake.

Andy Murray (GBR) [6] def. Michael Llodra (FRA) 6-4, 1-6, 7-5, 7-6(7)

This was on the verge of going five sets, but Murray recovered from a breakdown in the fourth on a shadow-streaked Grandstand and then took a see-saw tiebreak when Llodra faltered.

Amelie Mauresmo (FRA)[32] def. Kaia Kanepi (EST) 2-6, 6-4, 6-0

Defeating the solid Kanepi is a good win for the semingly revived Mauresmo. And now with Ivanovic out, she has a real shot at the quarterfinal.

Severine Bremond (FRA) def. Nicole Vaidisova (CZE) [20] 7-5, 6-3

After unexpectedly reaching the Wimbldon quarterfinals, Vaidisova has gone back to her losing ways.

Friday's Matches to Watch

Jie Zheng (CHN) vs. Jelena Jankovic (SRB) [2] Arthur Ashe Stadium - 11:00 am

Jankovic struggled to win her last match, and don't count out an upset in this one. Zheng reached the semifinals of Wimbledon, upsetting Ana Ivanovic along the way, and gave China its only tennis medal at the Olympics by capturing the women's doubles bronze with Zi Yan.

Lindsay Davenport (USA) [23] vs. Marion Bartoli (FRA) [12] Arthur Ashe Stadium - 7:00 pm

The talk of Lindsay Davenport making a Jimmy Connors-esque run here has begun. This match is hardly a given -- Bartoli has started to play a little better after slumping for almost a year. But once again, Davenport is playing someone who -- like her -- doesn't move that well. Playing at night with the crowd behind her, she should have the edge in this one.

Andy Roddick (USA) [8] vs. Ernests Gulbis (LAT) Arthur Ashe Stadium - 2nd evening match

A delicious matchup, and strangely, it's the young unseeded Gulbis who's more likely to control the outcome of this match. He likes the Grand Slam stage and isn't afraid to go toe to toe with the top players, and if he's on, his shotmaking ability could get the better of Roddick. But Roddick is the more competitively intense of the two, so if Gulbis' youthful inconsistency shows through, Roddick should be steady enough to prevail.

Tommy Robredo (ESP) [16] vs. Marat Safin Louis Armstrong Stadium - 4th match

Robredo -- tough but not fearsome. A good test to see if Safin can maintain the level needed to make a run here.

Marin Cilic (CRO) [30] vs. Robby Ginepri (USA) Grandstand - 2nd match

A very important match for both. The big-serving Cilic has a good record at the majors this year and is trying to build on the momentum he got after winning his first title at New Haven last week. Ginepri is trying to make some kind of statement in what he had hoped would be a rebuilding year.

Victoria Azarenka (BLR) [14] vs. Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) [21] Grandstand - 3rd match

Two rising youngsters. It won't be the prettiest or most error-free tennis, but it should be an intense battle. Wozniacki has been on a nice litttle run, winning two titles since Wimbledon.

Carlos Moya (ESP) vs. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA) Grandstand - 4th match

Moya hasn't been having a great year, but should be another good test for Tsonga's comeback from knee surgery.
