Amelie Mauresmo (FRA) vs. Serena Williams (USA) Centre Court - 2nd match
Two former Wimbledon champions and No. 1s face off in this third-rounder. Each has seen harder times lately, and neither has blown away their All England competition this week. Expect a shaky match at times, but also expect the same compelling contrast in styles—Williams pounding serves and ground strokes; Mauresmo gliding all over the court—that they’ve always brought to their matches. Williams has struggled, but Mauresmo has been injured and struggled even more. I think she’ll give it a valiant effort but come up just short.
Prediction: Williams
Marat Safin (RUS) vs. Andreas Seppi (ITA) [29] Court 1: 3rd match
Can the big man keep rolling? That’s what tennis fans want to know. There’s a world of them out there pulling for the game’s most beloved "Nutter," as London’s Daily Mail called him today. Safin has never played Seppi, and on paper he should have too much in the serve and forehand and backhand departments. But the Italian is tricky—his shots stay low and his short backswing makes his pace deceptive. He doesn’t hold a candle to Safin in the talent or smoothness department, but he could drive him crazy.
Prediction: Safin
Agnieszska Radwanska (POL) [14] vs. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (RUS) Court 3: 2nd match
This is the battle of the pronunciations. My advice: Don’t even try. Beneath the names, it’s a fast-rising 19-year-old Pole vs. a 16-year-old Russian who is making her first inroads into the professional game after years of junior dominance. Pavlyuchenkova is a basher in the classic Russian school; Radwanska has a little more touch and variety. That all-around skill, along with the momentum she’s built over the last couple months, should be enough to send Radwanska on to bigger and better things in the coming rounds.
Prediction: Radwanska
