Wimbledon 2008: Day 8 picks

By Tom Perrotta and Kamakshi Tandon

Roger Federer (SUI) [1] vs. Lleyton Hewitt (AUS) [2] Centre Court: 1:00 am

On Centre Court, we have the man who has won Wimbledon the last five years versus the man who won it the year before that. These two know each other well: This will be their 22nd meeting as professionals. Hewitt got the better of Federer early in their careers, winning 8 of their first 10 matches, but Federer has won the last 11, including their last two at Wimbledon, in 2004 and 2005. Despite a nagging hip injury, Hewitt has played some fine tennis so far. Federer, though often described in the papers here as man marching toward his own funeral, has looked as comfortable as ever. Hewitt will struggle to win a set.

Prediction: Federer

Rafael Nadal (ESP) [2] vs. Mikhail Youzhny (RUS) [17] Court 1: 2nd match

It's already been a historic week for Spain, which yesterday won the Euro Cup, the country's first international soccer title in 44 years. Can Rafael Nadal give his homeland even more to celebrate? On Court 1 today, Nadal takes on the same man, Mikhail Youzhny, he faced in the fourth round last year. It's a match Youzhny might have won if his back hadn’t locked up early in the third set (he won the first two sets convincingly). Youzhny hasn't had a great season, but he's the sort of player—flashy, powerful, always moving forward—who can keep Nadal on his heels. Nadal has played better than ever to this point in the year. The keys to the match will be Nadal's serve and Youzhny's one-handed backhand, one of the best in the game.

Prediction: Nadal

Richard Gasquet (FRA) [8] vs. Andy Murray (GBR) [12] Centre Court: 3rd match

Connoisseurs are salivating over this matchup between the two most artful shotmakers of their generation. A dreadful first part of the season hit rock-bottom when he had to pull out of the French Open with a knee injury, but he has resurrected himself here with three fine performances just when everyone had written him off.

The fans have been out in force on Henman Hill, but it's Murray they're rooting for now - the Scot has officially taken over as the great local hope now that Tiger Tim is in the commentary box rather than on court. He too looked in good form during the first week, and will want to be hitting some strong serves and looking to see if Gasquet is connecting or being error-prone. If the former, Murray will have pull out both his big forehand and all his variety to try to disrupt the Frenchman (not to mention stay away from Gasquet's famous backhand) - and he might not win even if he manages all that. If Gasquet is a bit off, then Murray can afford to hold back and play the points a little more.

The fans will definitely lift Murray up during the tight moments, but it remains to be seen if Gasquet will be cowed.

Prediction: Murray

Nicole Vaidisova (CZE) [18] vs. Anna Chakvetadze (RUS) [8] Court 1: 1:00 pm

The all head-case special. Like Gasquet, Vaidisova was losing match after match coming in but seems to have turned things around upon reaching the All England Club. Mental issues aside, Vaidisova's powerful game translates well to grass even though she's not exceptionally fast, and she reached the quarterfinals last year.

Apart from a couple of bright spots, Chakvetadze has struggled after violent robbers hit her home during the off season. Her skilful game will be a nice contrast to Vaidisova's, but the Czech has bigger weapons that should allow her to take control of most of the points. The question is, can she be consistent enough to win two sets against the crafty Russian?

The two are both also emotional players but in different ways - Vaidisova is hot-tempered on court while the tears tend to flow with Chakvetadze. This is a big match for both, so expect some dramatics.

Prediction: Vaidisova

Venus Williams (USA) [7] vs. Alisa Kleybanova (RUS) Court 2: 1:00 pm

Venus hit a 127 mph serve in her last match, but the Russian has a big serve too. Venus will have to be focused on her own service games to make sure she doesn't get broken late in a set and is unable to break back in time.

Prediction: Venus Williams

Serena Williams (USA) [6] vs. Bethanie Mattek (USA) Court 2: 2nd match

Mattek's claim to fame in tennis thus far has been her attention-grabbing outfits, but she committed to a huge fitness push at the end of last year and knocked out defending finalist Marion Bartoli in the third round to set up this all-American matchup. But Serena has been looking more solid than a lot of the top women, and her game is sill a lot bigger.

Prediction: Serena Williams
