How it tested: Like the original Rebel from Prince, this version has a 95-square-inch head and dense string pattern (18-by-20), but that’s where the similarities end. The EXO3 model is much heavier and has a greater emphasis on stability. The frame provides plenty of control and feedback, although it doesn’t help much with spin. Not surprisingly, the sweet spot is on the small side. You’ll know when you miss it. The Rebel also has the Energy Channel, a sculpted groove within the frame, to enhance stability and increase power. In terms of the former, it’s decent (the hefty weight also helps), but the latter has to come from the player. While the racquet’s flexibility rating is firm, many playtesters found a fair amount of flex in the head. Some said it hurt control when the ball was struck off-center, and surprisingly didn’t add feel on touch shots. The Rebel comes with grommets that can be removed from the O Ports for a more deadened response.
Playtester comments: “Great for people who use a flat ball”; “Feels like a very good ’80s racquet”; “Not too heavy, just heavy”; “The flex is an acquired taste.”
Bottom line: This stick is for college players, top juniors and serious tournament players. Everyone else should look elsewhere.
