FIRST TAKE:
Advanced players who want a firm, stable shoe should consider this offering from Adidas.

HOW IT TESTED:
Typically, shoes have foam midsoles, but the A3 Accelerate’s midsole is made of thermoplastic urethane columns, which are designed to perform three functions: provide longer-lasting cushioning, guide your foot to a proper landing, and aid in takeoff by springing back to their original shape. Remarking on the shoe’s ambitious design, players said the side-toside stability was excellent, though they didn’t notice any spring in their steps. And some folks experienced slipping in the heel. The amount of cushioning was deemed appropriate for advanced players, who liked the firm ride, but casual clubbers would have preferred more cushioning. Footnotes: The A3 Accelerate is narrow, and a bit stiff, requiring a break-in period. Also, the traction is ideal for hard courts.

BOTTOM LINE:
Stable, if pricey, hardcourt shoe for matches, not the mall.
