FIRST TAKE:
Fila built this model for players who rank stability as their number one concern.

HOW IT TESTED:
The Axelis D isn’t so much a shoe as it is armor. There’s a thermoplastic urethane cage around the heel and sturdy rubber that reinforces the synthetic leather upper. But, predictably, all that stability adds weight, and there’s no getting around the fact that the Axelis D, especially the men’s model, is heavy (it tips the scales at well over a pound for a men’s size 9). If you’re a big guy or girl who needs a beefy shoe, you’ll be fine. Otherwise, it might make sense to train with the Axelis D and switch to a lighter pair of shoes for matches.

BOTTOM LINE:
If Fila could get the weight down, the Axelis D would be a classic shoe. As it stands, it’s still a very good one.
