Final analysis: The only drawback we could find with the New Balance 1004 is the flex point. It should bend closer to the balls of the feet, their natural bending point, to provide more arch support. If you’re a grinder who plays frequently, this could cause foot problems. But even with that hiccup, the shoe offers a stable, lightweight and ventilated ride that impressed the majority of our weartesters. They appreciated how the lacing system, called NLock, provides security on the breathable mesh upper, and they liked the hard-plastic S-Curve stability system that runs the length of the outsole and supports the foot on sharp cuts. Plus, if you have wide feet and need extra room around the toe box, this one has the space.
