FIRST TAKE:
Maria Sharapova, Roger Federer, and Lleyton Hewitt entrust their feet to this high-performance shoe. Should you?

HOW IT TESTED:
The popularity of Nike’s various air-cushioned shoes has to do with the way they balance cushioning and stability. It’s a tricky proposition— too much cushioning and you sacrifice stability—but Nike usually gets it right, as it did with the Vapor Speed. It has a low-to-the-ground ride to keep you on an even keel, yet the cushioning is decent. But the Vapor Speed could have used more padding around the ankle. Nike skimped in that department, perhaps to keep the weight down, and playtesters complained of minor discomfort. And like other Nike models, the Vapor Speed is narrow in the forefoot, limiting the number of people who will feel comfortable in it.

BOTTOM LINE:
If you’re a serious player with a narrow foot, you’ll like these lightweight, stable shoes.
