Legs

The LegsBy Michael Schwartz, M.D.

The Importance of the Legs in Tennis:

What is the role of the legs in tennis?
The legs are responsible for all movement and for creating power in the stroke.

How should you train them to improve your game?
To keep your legs in top form you will need to train them in several different ways. First there is aerobic conditioning, such as running or using a treadmill or a lifecycle (exercise bike). Then there is anaerobic conditioning to improve strength -- this mainly involves weight training. Finally, you should play tennis on a regular schedule.

What are the most common injuries?
Shin splints: an inflammation of the tissue (periosteum) which is adjacent to the bones of the leg.
Prevention: stretching thoroughly prior to playing tennis or exercising. Gradually increase intensity of exercise with duration play.
Stress fractures: repetitive stress on the leg leads to the slow development of a fracture or crack through the bone. This is the direct result of training errors. Training to hard and too fast without gradually building up strength in the legs.
