Baseline is looking ahead to the new year by showcasing 21 players under 21 to watch out for in '21. To make the coveted list, players must be born in 2000 or later.

With Caroline Wozniacki retiring at the Australian Open, Denmark quickly missed having its very own tennis star. The Danes didn't have to wait long as teenager Clara Tauson was ready to spring from the wings.

At her Grand Slam debut in Paris, the youngster qualified and knocked out Jennifer Brady, 6-4 3-6 9-7, to reach the second round.

She plays with a game style quite opposite to Wozniacki with flat, powerful strokes from both wings.

Ranking: No. 152

Age: 17 (December 21, 2002)

What she did in 2020: Upset Brady to reach the Roland Garros second round; won two ITF titles

Career highlights: Second round Roland Garros 2020; seven ITF pro titles; 2019 Australian Open junior champion; first Danish girl ever to be ranked No. 1 in the junior rankings.

Though this year marked her first time inside of the Top 200, Tauson is by far the highest-ranked Dane on the WTA tour with the next player behind her ranked No. 999. She's just ahead of the men's highest ranked Dane, world No. 189 Mikail Torpegaard.
