MIAMI, Fla.—He may be the world’s No. 1 tennis player, but Carlos Alcaraz is still a man of the people.

After defeating Tommy Paul 6-4, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals at the Miami Open—a tennis tournament which is held inside an NFL stadium which itself sits inside a Formula 1 circuit—the 19-year-old had nothing but memes on his mind.

Alcaraz grabbed a marker for the winners’ traditional post-match camera lens autograph, but instead of his signature he scrawled two words that sent Spanish Twitter into a frenzy on Tuesday afternoon: “33? --> Soon”

“Anyone else know stuff?” Alcaraz quizzed his more than 400,000 followers on Twitter, as tennis fans scratched their heads in confusion. “33 how?”

But back home, Alcaraz’s message went instantly viral as Spanish fans quickly interpreted the message as a shoutout to two-time Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso.

The 41-year-old driver, who owns 32 Grand Prix wins in his decorated career, surprised fans by making the podium during both of the first two races of the season. Now, the fan excitement around a possible 33rd victory has hit a fever-pitch as round 3 kicks off in Australia this weekend.

"Someone lock this guy up!!!" Alonso tweeted in response, with a series of laughing emojis. "You're a phenomenon! Come on!!!"

Alonso’s most recent victory came in 2013, but who knows? Maybe the elusive 33 will eventually come right here at Hard Rock Stadium, when the Miami Grand Prix takes place in May.

In the meantime, Alcaraz is closing in on another massive victory of his own. The Spaniard is through to the last eight with dropping a set, and sits three wins away from completing the ‘Sunshine Double’—winning Indian Wells and Miami in the same year—and extending his stay at the top of the ATP rankings.

Top seed Alcaraz will face No. 9 seed Taylor Fritz on Wednesday evening for a spot in the semifinals.
