Last (Petko) Dance!

Andrea Petkovic bid a formal farewell to tennis at the Bad Homburg Open over the weekend, reuniting with friend and countrywoman Angelique Kerber for a fun afternoon of doubles action in front of her home fans.

“Thank you for this wonderful send off,” Petkovic wrote on Instagram.

Petkovic played her last official match last summer at the US Open, where she bowed out to Belinda Bencic in three sets, but has remained a fixture on tour as an analyst and commentator for Tennis Channel in the months since hanging up her racquets.

“When I watch a women's match, especially when I was still playing, I would sit there with my Moleskine and write down notes of what players were doing,” Petkovic said on the Inside-In Podcast in March.

“I would never trash a player for playing bad, I would always try and explain why things are happening. And mostly it's because your opponent is doing something really well in a way that makes you play worse.”

The 2014 Roland Garros semifinalist and former world No. 9 was joined on court by Kerber, who herself has been in the midst of an extended absence from tennis after giving birth to her first child in February.

Kerber first announced her maternity leave ahead of the 2022 US Open, meaning she was away from the tour when Petkovic played her last match. A tournament ambassador in Bad Homburg, the former No. 1 made up for lost time with Petkovic over the weekend.

“So much love!” Petkovic wrote on Kerber’s Instagram. “Thank you, Angie, for being there for me!”

Kerber has spoken about returning to tennis in time for the 2024 season, and Petkovic will likely be watching from afar, breaking down her comeback in the commentary booth.
