Hi Nick: I’m a 4.0 player and I have two questions for you. 1) Sometimes when I play a match against players of a similar skill level, they start zoning. I am a counterpuncher and do not possess much power. But I do have variety in my groundstrokes (my forehand is stronger than my backhand), a decent serve and competent net skills. What should I do when I come up against a hot opponent? 2) As my serve has improved, I have gotten better at saving break points, but I still get very nervous. What type of mental approach should I take when I face break points?

Hi Selvam: I read your questions several times and there is a strong indication you go south no matter who you play. Shame on you! It’s time that you totally stop saying this and concentrate on what you can do and what you do best. For example, if your forehand is your weapon, go to it more often. Create a strong enough muscle memory so that it happens without thinking. As far as your nerves, everyone gets nervous. It’s time that you tell yourself how lucky you are to play tennis and just go out there and play.
