NEW YORK—All we can say is 👀.

Ben Shelton enjoyed a pleasant surprise of his own at the 2023 US Open when he landed a lightning-fast 147mph serve—the fastest so far this tournament—during his 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory over Aslan Karatsev.

The 20-year-old seemed to surprise himself as she shared video of the impressive radar reading on social media.

But not everyone was pleased with the big serve. The fast-rising youngster admitted father and coach Bryan Shelton had something to say about it in his post-match press conference.

“Dad is always upset when I go for the bombs,” he said. “He was saying to me after the match, he's like, ‘I know you looked at the clock, looked right at it after.’

“They had a little I guess statistic up on the screen of fastest serves of the tournament. He's like, ‘I know you were looking up at that, too, to see you were number one on the leaderboard.’ He gave me a hard time about it.”

Still, Shelton, who signed a head-turning deal with On running earlier this season, doesn’t seem too bothered in the midst of his career-best run at the US Open, only dropping two sets in his first three matches.

“The more calm, relaxed, and kind of free I am in my service games, I serve a lot better. I've been holding serve a lot lately. I knew that I had another gear that I could go to that I've seen in myself before. I saw a little bit of that in myself today.”

Into the second week for the first time, the unseeded American will face compatriot Tommy Paul in a rematch of their Australian Open quarterfinal that took place back in January.
