Bertens tops her breakthrough year with an engagement

This season was a breakthrough year for Kiki Bertens, capped off with an engagement to her longtime-boyfriend Remko de Rijke.

The Dutch player had career-best runs at three of the four majors this year, with her greatest performance being a quarterfinal run at Wimbledon. She reached a career-high ranking of No. 9 in the world.

Ending her season in a major way, Bertens replaced an injured Simona Halep at the WTA Finals to make her debut in Singapore. The 26-year-old made the most of the moment and fought all the way to the semifinals before falling to eventual champion Elina Svitolina in three sets.

For Bertens, her year of highlights wasn't over yet. On Friday, she announced her engagement to De Rijke. Her new fiancé is a former ATP pro and has been part with Berten's team as a physiotherapist, fitness coach and hitting partner.

Bertens will look to carry her on and off-court momentum into 2019.
