It may not have been the best weather for fireworks, but Pam Shriver was still able to celebrate her July 4th birthday in style at Wimbledon.

The former WTA doubles No. 1 was jokingly looking for advice on her “breadstick” 61st birthday on Twitter, and coaching pupil Donna Vekic was quick to volunteer herself as head party planner:

Shriver joined Vekic’s coaching team last fall and the partnership has paid massive dividends for the big-hitting Croat, who began the 2023 season with a run to the Australian Open quarterfinals and return to the Top 20. In the lead up to Wimbledon, she finished runner-up to Petra Kvitova at the bett1open in Berlin.

Though her birthday was ultimately interrupted by a lengthy rain delay that kept outdoor action from taking place, Shriver was still able to celebrate with Vekic, who turned 27 and enjoyed her own Wimbledon birthday last week.

So eager was Shriver to slice into her birthday cake that Team Vekic couldn’t even finish singing “Happy Birthday” to the Hall of Famer.

Here’s hoping Shriver wished in part for better weather around London so her charge might take the court as scheduled on Wednesday against Zhang Shuai.
