Coco Gauff was at her clay-court best at Roland Garros on Monday, sliding past another avid clay-courter—Ons Jabeur—in just 53 minutes, 6-3, 6-1, to reach the first Grand Slam quarterfinal of her career.

With the win, the 17-year-old became the youngest woman to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal in 15 years, since Nicole Vaidisova—a younger 17—reached the semifinals at Roland Garros in 2006.

Gauff is also the youngest American woman to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal since Venus Williams—also a younger 17—made her famous run to her first Grand Slam final at the 1997 US Open.

After her win over Jabeur, Gauff was asked how she felt about her age being such a hot topic.

“I mean, I don’t really care if you guys talk about my age or not,” she replied. “I’m 17. That’s the truth. If you guys want to talk about it, it’s fine.

"I mean, on the court, I promise you my opponents don’t care about how old I am. They want to beat me just as bad regardless of my age, and I want to beat them just as bad regardless of their age.

“I don’t mind if you guys talk about my age. It’s a fact to me and it’s going to change every year. I mean, I’m only going to be 17 once, so you might as well talk about it while I’m 17.”
