On Thursday, John Isner and Pablo Cuevas waged war across three tiebreak sets in Madrid. The world No. 47-ranked Cuevas pushed the American to the brink, best exemplified by an insanely skilled flick of his racquet for a passing shot winner in the second tiebreak.

In the end, it was the big-serving American who would advance to the quarterfinals by a slim, 6-7 (9), 7-6 (3), 7-6, (4) scoreline.

At 33, Isner is playing some of the best tennis of his life. Since winning the Miami Open for his first ATP Masters 1000 title, he's returned to the Top 10. Now thanks to his run in Madrid, he's likely to ascend to a career-high ranking of No. 8.
