Benjmain Bonzi upsets Daniil Medvedev to kick off Wimbledon

Daniil Medvedev knows his numbers—he studied physics and math at a specialized school before enrolling in economics at a university in his native Moscow. But when it comes to calculating a restaurant bill in the United States? That’s a different kind of math test.

The 2021 US Open champion paid a visit to Tennis Channel’s VIP Tennis Lounge with Garbine Muguruza, where the former world No. 1s dished on everything from tour life to their dream splurges.

When asked how he might celebrate a future Grand Slam win or major career milestone, the Formula 1 and car enthusiast didn’t hesitate.

“I have a lot of things already! But I actually like to set myself goals sometimes,” Medvedev said. “When we’re talking about big titles… Well, I like cars a lot so next Grand Slam—a car for sure.”

As is tradition in the VIP Tennis Lounge—previously visited by stars like Carlos Alcaraz, Nick Kyrgios, Aryna Sabalenka—the interview ended with the arrival of the check. But unlike the others, Medvedev was quick to start negotiating.

He carefully reviewed the bill, even disputing a few humorous charges—including a fine for four “bad jokes”—and couldn’t resist poking fun at the complexities of U.S. tipping.

“The problem in the U.S. is that the check is already quite expensive!” he said. “And then you add 20 percent, and then there’s going to be tax, and then there’s going to be this or that…”

The good news is Medvedev will have more chances to brush up on the system as he returns to the States for the North American hard-court swing. He’s set to compete at the Mubadala Citi DC Open in Washington, D.C. from July 21 to 27.
