What are flights like to Kasatkina this time of year?

Daria Kasatkina got word that friend Elena Rybakina may be playing for her instead of Kazakhstan after a verbal slip-up from former No. 1 Chris Evert, who was analyzing Rybakina’s first round against American Shelby Rogers.

“Rybakina is Russian, came from Russia, and moved to Kasatkina,” said Evert as Rybakina battled back from a set down to defeat Rogers beneath the Centre Court roof.

Co-commentator Cliff Drysdale quickly corrected the mistake and both Evert and Kasatkina took the moment in stride, the latter tweeting the clip and joking “They just created a new country!”

Daria Saville, a fellow Daria and no stranger to a viral online moment, jumped in to add, “Can you please create a flag?”

Playing for Kazakhstan since 2018, Rybakina was indeed able to compete—and eventually win—Wimbledon last summer while Russian and Belarusian nationals were otherwise banned from competing at the All England Club.

“I was born in Russia, but of course I am representing Kazakhstan,” Rybakina clarified after reaching the semifinals a year ago. “It's already a long journey for me. I was playing Olympics, [Billie Jean King] Cup before. I got so much help and support.

“I'm feeling just the support of the people and very happy to represent Kazakhstan because I think I'm also bringing some results, which are very good for the sport in Kazakhstan.”

Doesn’t sound like Rybakina plans to represent Kasatkina any time soon, but others may happily take up the flag—if she makes one!
