Karolina Pliskova was the No. 2 seed and had beaten Petra Martic recently in Miami, but the Croatian had a 3-1 edge in their career meetings. Still, Martic tends to get a little unlucky deep in Slams so seeing her win 6-3, 6-3 with very little drama at all was surprising. It's the world No. 31's fourth career round of 16 appearance. With Pliskova out, Naomi Osaka is guaranteed to hold onto the No. 1 ranking.

Garbine Muguruza vs. Elina Svitolina should have been a blockbuster match, but instead, Muguruza won easily, 6-3, 6-3. The 2016 champion showed signs of her former self in the 1 hour and 28 minute match. She'll play Sloane Stephens for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Day 6 RG Surprises: Martic, Paire and Vekic all win

No one could have expected Benoit Paire to recover from his five-set epic on Wednesday in time to survive another struggle on Friday. He didn't have to as Pablo Carreno Busta retired when Paire went up two sets to one. The Spaniard needed treatment at 0-3 in the third-set tiebreak for an adductor injury. It's Paire's first time in the Roland Garros fourth round. He also took the court later on the same day for a doubles win (with Leander Paes).

Donna Vekic has quietly made her way to Week 2 for just the second time in her carer. The 22-year-old dismissed Belinda Bencic, 6-4, 6-1. Bencic was seeded No. 15 and looked poised to make a deep run after reaching the semifinals in Madrid as well as winning Dubai earlier this season.

Anisimova in Question

Day 6 RG Surprises:
Martic, Paire and
Vekic all win

Day 6 RG Surprises: Martic, Paire and Vekic all win

Amanda Anisimova retired from her doubles match on Friday with partner Xenia Knoll. The two were down 5-0 against Laura Siegemund and Anna-Lena Friedsam. The reason given was Anisimova's viral infection. The teenager is still scheduled to play singles, her first third-round appearance in Paris, against Irina-Camelia Begu. It's not the first illness to hinder a draw as Simona Halep mentioned being sick, while Kiki Bertens retired with an illness.
