Spoiler Alert!

Casper Ruud’s Acapulco press conference took an odd turn in its final seconds when he seemingly revealed an as-yet-unreleased change to the ATP’s 2024 schedule, hinting that the tournament in Los Cabos will be moving from August to February next season.

Despite a disappointing loss to Taro Daniel in the second round, the former world No. 2 reaffirmed his affection for the Abierto Mexicano Telcel and teased the possibility of playing an even more robust Mexican swing next year.

“I feel great support, and it makes me want to come back for sure,” he explained after losing a third-set tiebreaker to Daniel. “Let’s see how the schedule looks for next year but I think that could be an option.

“I think, also, Los Cabos will be the week before or after Acapulco next year if I’m not mistaken. It could be an option to play both, so let’s see.”

Los Cabos has traditionally taken place as a precursor to the US Open summer swing, making a potential move to combine with the South/Central American Golden Swing a major one, though evidently one that had already circulated among the players.

As the press conference came to an abrupt end, Ruud realized he’d made a slight snafu.

“Did I say something wrong?” he asked before making his best Rodney Dangerfield face.

“Oh ok, sorry. Now you know!”

If and when the news becomes official, hopefully the two-time Grand Slam finalist is tapped to make the announcement.
