Djokovic celebrates Orthodox Christmas with his family

Novak Djokovic is soaking up extra family quality time before he begins his journey Down Under. The world No. 1 celebrated Orthodox Christmas this week, which lands on January 7.

Instead of, or on top of, celebrating on December 25, Orthodox Christians (which includes Russians, Serbians, Ukrainians and more) rely on the Julian calendar. Some of the traditions include the burning of the "badnjak" (a piece of a tree) and the hiding of a coin in a round bread called "cesnica", with the finder of the coin deemed lucky for the year.

Djokovic, his wife Jelena and their two young children, Stefan and Tara, got to soak in the festivities all week long.

Usually Djokovic would have made the long trip to Australia by now, but with the dates pushed back to February, he's had the rare chance to enjoy a more normal pace of home life.

The 33-year-old will begin his 2020 season representing Serbia at the ATP Cup in Melbourne starting Feb. 1. He and his team, featuring Filip Krajinovic, Nikola Cacic and Dusan Lajovic, will be the defending champions.
